Rebecca (1940)

Review: This masterpiece is about a woman with a very strong presence named Rebecca. The only thing is, she drowned in a sailing accident the year before. One of Alfred Hitchcock's greatest films takes place at a beautiful mansion called Manderlay on the French seashore where a widower takes home a new wife. Joan Fontaine does an excellent job of playing the nervous newlywed trying to live up to everyone's excpectations, while Judith Anderson also turns in an exceptional performance as the creepy head maid. Overall, enough can not be said of how the story expertly uses sub-plots, deep characters, bizarre twists and chilling climaxes to portray a dead woman's haunting spirit. -JNJ
