Hairspray (2007)

Viewing Source: Starz

Review: Hairspray is another in a run of recent musical hits. This one stars Nikki Blonsky as an exuberant teenage girl hoping to get on the local TV dance show and John Travolta, who plays her mom, yes, her mom. Blonsky is charming, fun, and sweet and Travolta is surprisingly both believable and lovable playing a character of the opposite gender. Michelle Pfeiffer is deliciously evil as the mother of a rival teen and Christopher Walken adds some laughs and sincerity as the father. An honorable mention should also go to James Marsden who is quickly becoming the face and voice of the modern day musical. The catchy songs, flashy costumes, and colorful sets also help to make a very enjoyable musical. -JNJ
